Service Summary

Videoconference services are available upon request for a variety of administrative and academic events (meetings, classes, town halls, dissertations, and interviews, etc.) that enable faculty, staff, and students to meet face-to-face with people around the world. Mason offers the following enterprise web conferencing platforms on any device, anywhere, anytime: Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, Microsoft Teams, Webex Meetings, and Zoom. These service offerings provide a secure virtual meeting space, screen sharing, and calendar integration.

Webex Retirement

Cisco Webex service offerings are being phased out at Mason to provide a more streamlined set of services. Alternate solutions are available including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Blackboard Collaborate. See Webex Retirement Roadmap for details. If you believe you still require a Webex account, submit a Webex Meetings Support request form to be reviewed by ITS.

Service Offerings

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is an interactive web conferencing and virtual classroom environment designed for teaching and learning and real-time collaboration. It is available in all myMason Organizations and Blackboard Courses. Instructors can use Collaborate to set up virtual conferencing for their classes while students can participate in chat and discussion sessions from anywhere. Instructors can also share PowerPoint presentations and other content using a virtual whiteboard.

Microsoft Teams

Note: Microsoft Teams is an evolving service; settings within Teams may change with little to no notice as the ITS Project Team makes adjustments for security, compliance, or performance reasons.

Microsoft (MS) Teams is an enterprise-wide collaboration suite that lives within Mason’s Office 365 environment.  At its core, MS Teams provides chat, audio calling, video calling, screen share, and more with individuals and groups outside of a team structure. Within the structure of a formal team, team members have access to all of that as well as several additional Office 365 shared features: email, calendar, notebook with OneNote, shared file storage with SharePoint integrated with your OneDrive, Planner, and more within Team Sites. MS Teams is available via a web browser, desktop application, and mobile app.

Videoconferencing Rooms

Videoconference services are available upon request for a variety of administrative and academic events (meetings, classes, town halls, dissertations, and interviews, etc.) that enable faculty, staff, and students to meet face-to-face with people around the world.

The Enterprise Collaboration team assists in connecting videoconference events using physical spaces equipped with standards-based videoconferencing systems and web conferencing tools. Enterprise Collaboration manages rooms on the Arlington, Fairfax, Science and Technology campuses and Mason locations that are integrated with Cisco Webex Meetings and Webex Teams. Please note these rooms do not work with Skype.

Webex Meetings

Cisco Webex Meetings, available at gmu.webex.com, is a cloud-based web conferencing tool that may be used for meetings and collaboration allowing participants to share video, audio, and content—all online. Webex Meetings allows you to meet face-to-face using HD video conferencing; share your desktop, documents, or individual applications with everyone in the meeting. Webex Meetings provides collaboration with people within and outside of Mason.

Zoom

Note: In response to COVID-19, this tool is being released on an accelerated timeline. Some configurations may still be changed to bring this tool in full compliance at Mason as we return to normal operations.

Zoom, available at gmu.zoom.us/signin, is a cloud-based web conferencing tool for video and audio conferencing, collaboration, chat, and webinars across mobile devices, desktops, telephones, and room systems. Zoom allows you to meet face-to-face using HD video conferencing; share your desktop, documents, or individual applications with everyone in the meeting. It provides collaboration with people within and outside Mason.
